IMO, I feel like it depends on whether is it HR or recruiters.
With HR, you want to keep the conversations open as long as possible because things can still change. With recruiters, you want to be upfront about it since they already have a fixed salary range that they have to work with.

I think it's fine to be upfront about salary expectations! To me, I think it helps if all parties are transparent and on the same page with each other. This helps everyone find their best match whether you're seeking employment or a recruiter.
Also, personally, I don't think salary is a clear-cut deal breaker. By being upfront about it, it helps to facilitate discussions around it if there is a desire to move forward by both parties. If your expected salary exceeds the company's budget but they're interested in hiring you, it opens up a possibility to explain why you think you deserve that salary and what they can do about it, ie matching it or throwing in more incentives/benefits in your package for a lower salary. If your expected salary is ok with the company, then thats' great too - you get what you want!
Well, these are words coming from a fresh grad though, so I can't say if it's really fine to be upfront about it - simply my thoughts haha.

Yes, I agree that with recruiters makes sense to be immediately upfront.
With HR, I think it also depends on how many rounds of interview it's going to be! If I need to go through 5 rounds of interviews, I might want to understand the potential salary range on the second or third interview so we don't waste each other's time.
Curious to know, would hiring manager/HR minus points if a candidate express salary expectations on the 1st/2nd interview?
