I know the conventional wisdom is that you should only use miles to redeem business and first class flights, because the value of a mile for economy class flights is less than the value of cashback cards. But I'm doing the math - a SIA economy class return flight to Japan is 54000 miles, or $1478.70. That means that each mile is worth 2.7 cents. With a 4mpd card, that's 10.8 cents per dollar, which is much more than unlimited cashback cards. Doesn't that make it worth it to claim for an economy flight? Am I calculating this wrongly?

It won't be as high as 10.8 cents per dollar as you also have to account for conversion fees (if any), min. spend, spend limits and the time you spent strategising about miles which you can't really quantify with a dollar value. But yes, if just based on pure dollar value, it's slightly more worth it than cashback cards.
