Hello, I'm Clarida. I have worked in my current job for 7 years and because the job doesn't have any progression prospects, I want to go on to a more senior managerial role. When I look at jobs advertised online, I see mostly entry level jobs. How should I go about looking for such jobs that are higher level?

Hi to all panelists and everyone else, any thoughts on this issue is appreciated!

What are some things that existing employees might judge a new staff on that lasts and how to avoid falling into the bad side of the more domineering existing employees?

If unfortunately a bad bond is formed for whatever reason, how do we go about it? As a new staff, should one pretend it doesn't exist and wait for it to calm? Or initiate and check in with the seemingly unhappy party?

Thank you!

👨 Quak Swee Seng

I’m Swee Seng, currently the Emerging Markets Lead for GPTW Institute Singapore. In this role, I oversee the company's digital marketing and sales effort in Indonesia, Myanmar, and Vietnam. I’m a graduate of the WSG's Professional Conversion Programme (PCP) for Digital Sales Executive. As a professional who had personally made a career transition, I’m happy to share my experiences in reskilling and the transition to digital marketing.

👩 Lee Mee Nee

I’m Mee Nee and I’ve been working in the semiconductor industry for over 20 years. I’ve previously supported new product introduction to mass production in a manufacturing environment. Later, I led a team of Engineers and guided the process of new product transfers from initial prototype builds to final product launch ready for mass production. I hope to give back to the industry by sharing my work experiences and skill-sets acquired over the course of my career.

👨 Jared Chan

I’m Jared, marketing manager at Commune. Prior to joining the furniture industry, I’ve had the privilege to gain experience from various industries such as F&B, FMCG and Events. As a volunteer Career Advisor, my hope is that I can value-add by sharing insights on how I managed the various transitions across sectors and to stay relevant.

Workforce Singapore’s volunteer Career Advisors initiative aims to provide individuals (especially mature workers) with peer-level support and career guidance as they navigate professional pathways to advance their careers, or transition to other jobs. The pool of volunteer Career Advisors from various professional communities will draw from their respective industry experience to provide individuals with sector and occupation-specific career advice, and to connect them to helpful resources. Through the volunteer Career Advisors initiative, workers will have the opportunity to access important insights on industry trends and emerging skills to make informed career decisions with greater confidence. The volunteer Career Advisors initiative has been launched for the Accountancy, Electronics, Information & Communications Technology and Retail sectors. It will be progressively rolled out in more sectors.

Is a myth or true that a mid career switch to a new sector, one should expect a pay drop?...
