Received yearly increment with a poor increment. Company attempts to justify reason for so. Advise wanted.

Hi Seedly Friends,

I'm in the Social Sector working with a SSA.

I recently received my yearly increment of $300. Although this is about between 10 - 12% increment, the current salary guidelines for my role is just an $80 upward of my new pay. Essentially a $80 increment (3.5%) if you factor in market re-alignment. My previous monthly was based off 2021's salary guidelines due to me joining before the launch of 22's financial year guidelines whilst not being allowed 22's increment due to not completing my probation yet.

I did attempt to put forth my intentions for better remuneration however was rejected on the basics that a $300 increment is the highest there is in the organization and that the role entails to similar pay scale. They did acknowledge salary re-alignment but kept insisting this $300 is justifiable.

This was also with a recent promotion of mine being rejected on basics of budgeting and too early for progression reasons my head of department gave to my RO/Manager.

I push forth for my HOD to re-look into a possible review of the increment and to factor in again re-alignment & increment. He'll get back to me by end of the week. My question would be assuming a current shortfall of $230 from market rate + 16 months of service, what is a good amount to accept if the review was accepted and a new offer is received.

Due to poor progression & bad company culture, I may Intend to jump ship once I hit my 2 year mark but until then I still seek for proper compensation or I'll just leave once our yearly bonuses are in.

Thats quite high for increment! But you know what you expect and if it doesnt suit you you can make a list of how you have hit your KPIs and helped your team.

Wow, actually a $300 increment from SSA is really considered a lot. Based on my own experience coming from SSA and then leaving after 6yrs+ to a new industry where you have to restart.

Sometimes we have to count our blessings, but unfortunately for me management wasn't good, hence I left else I would have stayed on and be content with the pay.

Perhaps check around with trusted colleagues in same company or other company but same induatry to find out the usual increment in this industry?

Personally, 10-12% increment in social sector is ALOT, as the usual increment is 2-3%, and, considering you are only there for 1 year plus. So you are actually receiving more than fair compensation. Promotion in any sector at the earliest is at least 3 years.

Rather than pursuing for "proper compensation" which may affect your reputation, perhaps upskilling and look for another job opportunities that may fulfill your compensation expectation. Having a realistic expectation especially in current economic situation and in the social sector will be helpful to keep your heart and mind sane.

$300 is honestly a lot in the social sector as they are not prioritizing P&L.

if money is your main push, go for private sector where the Money is.

Salary guideline is always inflated...
