Reasonable Pay Raise

I have recently got a promotion that is about 2-3 positions higher.

I was just wondering which pay grade should I be following when discussing with the HR?

  1. A normal pay increment
  2. A pay that is paid for that particular position

For 1, my guess is that the pay would be same as one of my colleague who is about the same as my current position. However, if I were to just settle with this range, I would be getting the same pay with additional responsibilities, work and overtime.

However if I were to fall into 2, that would mean a 40% and above pay raise, which I feel that the boss would probably "whaaaaat" me if I were to raise this to the HR.

Which would be the better choice of the 2? Obviously it would be great if I can fall into the 2nd point, but I'm having self doubts at the same time.

Yup usually it's one increment as Acting Manager then another increment upon confirmation. So two increments matches the "2-3 positions" higher that you mentioned.

I guess the third increment would be for people who are settled/senior in that post?

Good considerations. I feel that many companies like to promote a person as an acting Manager first and then eventually rise them up to full Manager when they prove that they are competent. The salary then should be in-between 1 & 2.
