To live practically and to spend on only the practical options can actually be a lot more affordable than luxury options.
Unfortunately, in today's consumerism world, we want more than just practical things. We choose luxury options for all things such as car, house, clothes and accessories. This seems to be a trend and people are not happy with standard options. They want to stand out and flex their affordability power to others.
I am also aware that we do not want to just live like monks and practice minimalism. What is the balance and what are your thoughts about status signaling symbols?

The balance is in your belief.
Everyone is different. Everyone has a different standard and a different balance.
The important thing is to find what matters most for you and what is sufficient.

Agree with living below ur means... So I have the ability to splurge anytime i I want. ie food, hobbies, trips... And yet still have my emergency funds / networth secured. Live below ur means doesn't mean frugal, doesn't mean no happiness, doesn't mean being mean to self.
Agree with buying quality stuffs that costs a notch more yet lasts way longer than fast moving fashion. ROI is better. Balance it out.
One should go out to more 'ulu' places and see how happy the locals are with so little. And one will be so grateful for what u have. And I am not talking abt those city shopping places like BKK.
Being minimalist with quality stuffs (better ROI) ensures sustanability and free up spaces and time for more replacement of stuffs, why not?
I am still trying to be a minimalist / sustainable.

I like your post. I am a photographer and part of my job involves helping people look rich subtlely in their choice of lifestyle.
I am not brand conscious, i lead a minimalist lifestyle, I wear Bata but I also buy Prada because I cannot find other nicer designs that time. I appreciate good designs. If I have more time to seek out less known brands, or no-brand products which has great quality, I will.
