My work’s leave cycle just started, and I’ve decided to resign. Would it be okay to use most of my leave, and then submit my resignation and serve the notice period?

In short: Take 3 weeks leave —> submit resignation —> serve notice period. Basically is it okay to use up all my annual leave at the start of the leave cycle despite not planning to serve the company for a year more?

Dumb question because this is my first job.

Most companies prorate the annual leave thus even if your entitlement is 14 days for the year, you don't get the full utilization at the start.

Hi Anon! I think best to discuss with your HR on the leave policies in your company.

  • Some companies allow encashment so maybe you can get some money from your unused leave!

  • But almost all companies do pro-ration of their leaves (be it annual leave, family care leave or other paid leaves) so if you overconsume, you would have to pay back in cash. E.g. If you total annual entitlement is 21 days, it doesnt mean you can use all 21 days at the start of the year. If you worked for only 3 months then resign, you probably only entitled to 5 days. If you took all 21 days, you have to pay back the overconsumed 16 days.

Hi Anon! Please don’t take your 3 weeks leave before quitting. HR will probably claim back monetary ...
