[Looking for] Tips for self-employed fresh grad

Hi Community,

Instead of job-hunting, are there tips for a fresh grad who is keen on becoming self-employed?

  • What are the potential issues one may face?
  • What are benefits one may reap?

Thank you 👋

Self employed route is good but requires lots of self discipline! It is also a lonely route where you would find very few support, so you must have a vision before embarking on it and a strong belief you can overcome all that is to come otherwise it is easy to give up.

Sharing from the perspective of someone who knows a self-employed fresh grad

Potential issues

  • You can be looking at a lack of funding if you do not have enough capital
  • Manpower resourcing if you are looking to get things done faster. Outsource your work may help to secure more client
  • Long hours will potentially be taking a toll on your mental health, friendship, and family relationship.
  • Client management is the hardest to get right but you must get it right.
  • Building a brand/expertise around yourself is hard at the beginning.

Benefits

  • If you are visionary and making the right connections, you can definitely earn more than being a fresh grad.
  • Time is much more flexible but not less as you can arrange your stuff around.
  • Project management skills will be transferrable anywhere if you decided to stop being a self-employed
  • Exposure to different types of people, expectations, and work.

All the best!!
