Think of yourself as a F1 race car. No matter how fresh you start off at the starting line, there will be a point that you need to refuel.
The same goes with your education and skills. You can choose not to refuel, but you have to accept that your car will slow down and eventually stop running.
If your car (or career) can coast on all the way to the finish line, then I'd say its not mandatory.
But in the age of exponential change, careers like these are few and far between.
Another thing you need to consider is this: If you never upgrade your skillset after uni, there will be a ton of people who have the exact same skillset as you.
How would you expect to command a higher salary then? It's supply and demand
