Unless otherwise agreed between parties in the divorce, child maintenance is always shared between parents, usually in the proportions of their respective incomes but also taking into account their respective expenses and assets post-divorce. Even wives who have been homemakers or parties who have been unemployed during the marriage are expected to secure employment and contribute financially towards the children. This reflects the shared parental obligation towards the children.
