So, I had this chat with a colleague at work about our investment experiences, mainly using Tiger and IBKR for stocks. We were just sharing tips and learning from each other. Next thing I know, a colleague who loves to gossip started spreading rumors that I’m now some "rich person" or whatever.
Honestly, my financial situation isn’t anything extraordinary. I sometimes buy a few nice things here and there, but nothing major. It caught me off guard that such a casual conversation could lead to this.
Now, I’m wondering if talking about money at work is really a bad idea?

In general, talking about money at work isn’t wrong, but it can be tricky depending on the workplace culture. Some people are open to sharing and learning, while others might misinterpret things or spread rumours. In fact, discussing salary has long been seen as taboo, but more people are now realising that open conversations about money can lead to fairer pay and better transparency.
Here’s something that explains the pros and cons of discussing salary and how to go about it tactfully. At the end of the day, it’s not about avoiding the topic completely—it’s more about how and with whom the conversation happens.

Don't discuss ever your salary or net worth etc with your colleagues. Personally, I don't think that there is anything wrong with discussing/sharing investment opportunities/ideas. I remember one of my colleagues had no idea about things like the SRS etc until I explained it to him.
