Is it possible for an insurance agent withhold certain information in order to secure sales (eg. hide certain ineligibility conditions during policy underwriting)?

If my own insurance agent said I am not eligible for life insurance, but now another agent from the same company approaches me and claims to be able to help me to obtain life policy because of his boss' influence, is this a red flag? I am quite skeptical

Generally, both the insurance agent and the client will complete the application form together. Consequently, both parties have the onus to check through the application prior to signing, and submission.

Above all, if you have a medical condition, then you should double check and confirm that this has been accurately declared in the application form. And the same goes to the insurance agent - to ensure that such information has been filled into the respective section. This is because all health and life insurance applications are subjected to medical underwriting. As a result, witholding such information doesn't do you any benefit.

Meanwhile, I'm highly doubtful on the boss's 'influence' on the underwriting result. If this is possible, please let everyone know so that anyone who is uninsurable may look for this influential boss for insurance application. In effect, both parties get a win-win - the client gets the insurance despite his or her pre-existing medical condition; while the boss get the sales. Anyway, treat this with a pinch of salt as I haven't heard of such influence given my decade of experience in this industry.

Hi there,

Yes this is a huge massive red flag. If anything, the underwriting risks that every company takes is different hence you can get a different underwriting verdict from different company. Some may give an exclusion only while another may reject you completely. But this is different from a different underwriting verdict due to someone Else's influence. It is against the interests of the insurer company to grant a policy to someone who's insurability is in question because of an agent/leader's influence.

Insurance ultimately is done bona fide, ie. in good faith That the information presented on both ends are transparent and true. If any of that is compromised, that should be a red flag to you.
