Is Coursera courses helpful in landing jobs?

Calling out to any HR personnels!!

I’m currently pursuing a professional certification from Meta (free for students) and am thinking of doing the Google one too (but I would need to pay $80 per month) In the meantime, I’m doing my part time degree in Mathematics… so just wondering if I should make an investment in Coursera? Any advise appreciated

Hi, the problem about these online Coursera courses is that employers do not recognize the certificate. I would also suggest you keep your investment low by going for government subsidized courses instead.

You might consider taking an online bootcamp instead that is recognized locally. I took the Vertical Institute Data Analytics Bootcamp and it was very great, as well as highly subsidized . The cert is also accredited by the Institute of Banking & Finance Singapore. Besides that, you can check out General Assembly (but is more expensive).

  • If something that is free or cheap. You are probably the product eg. Facebook is free, but FB will sell your info.
  • if information are so generic and free that can put it online for masses to learn and self taught what is the value? Everybody can do it. Vs specific problem that only you can solve. It is a supply and demand issue.
  • But if you want to learn extra knoweldge because of you are interested in the industry, or want to start your own buisness, is a good channel.
  • usually is the supervisor who put out the job requirements for the HR to look for candidates.
  • so i highly doubt supervisor will want a self taught certificate, at least in Singapore, as there are already preferences over local uni vs private uni, the salary has an obvious difference between the fresh grad.
  • It can be a plus point for these online course but will never be the main consideration.
  • you can reference to jobstreet for the job requirements.
