Is Amex gold charge card good?

Understand that the rewards program isn't even anywhere near "economical", but am wondering if the charter / global assist / general service is truly excellent? Looking for a card that is actually there for the cardholder 24/7 when things truly screw up (e.g. overseas or otherwise). As an additional question, do charge cards affect credit score / get counted as credit limit by CBS in any way? Thanks!
