If Singapore abolish National Service, what impact does it have for the economy?

I think NS has served its purpose for providing stability for our infrastructures for the rapid progress of the Nation. I feel that we take it for granted. Without us serving the nation and being vigilant, Singapore would be financially impractical to invest in. Opposers say NS useless and the money could be put to other sectors but that’s just another ‘poor dad’ mentality. You just can’t have a rich and beautiful house without a door/gate, fire extinguisher and a camera in your living room.

Couldn't agree more. There's always that concensus that National Service wastes our youth - which given certain circumstances, maybe true to a degree.

That said, national economical metrics are dependent on national security 100%. Can't just let any rogue nation steamroll in can we?

Of course, certain aspects of NS can still be improved greatly la ah. I think we can all be honest on that front! To those serving, think of the life lessons learn not the life forgone. To those who served, ORD loh!

Many people feel that National Service is a waste of time as they have to put on hold their dreams and further studies to dedicate 2 years of their life to serve the army. While I do agree with the statement, I feel that it is essential given that Singapore has a small population as compared to other countries. Thus, all Singaporean males are required to serve NS to protect our country and sovereignty. On a side note, we also get to learn some life skills such as discipline and time management skiills.

As for the impact on our economy, a strong defence force/army serves as a deterrent and imporves national security. This will in turn, attract foreign investors to invest in Singapore and set up businesses here, helping to boost the economy.

Therefore, if Singapore were to abolish NS, I'm sure that there will be a negative impact on our economy since a majority of people in our army are made up of NSFs.

It is not an economic decision if NS is abolished.

IMO, keep it going. No other way...
