IBKR Referral Link: What US$3,000 Actually Earns (Not US$1,000)

Up to US$1,000 in IBKR stock" is the headline you'll see everywhere. Here's the formula behind it, because I think it changes who this is worth it for.

How the reward works

IBKR pays US$1 of its own stock (IBKR Class A shares) for every US$300 of net deposits in your first year, capped at US$1,000.

1. US$3,000 deposited → about US$10 in shares
2. US$30,000 → about US$100
3. US$300,000 or more → the US$1,000 maximum

So it's a small bonus on money you were moving to IBKR anyway, not a reason to open the account.

The order that keeps it

1. Open the referral link before the IBKR app or website
2. Click Open Account and apply in the same browser session
3. Choose an individual or joint account (tax-advantaged, advisor and institutional accounts are excluded)
4. Pick IBKR Lite or Pro. It doesn't affect the reward
5. Fund it. Every deposit in the first year after your first deposit adds shares

Things that cost you shares

• ✅ Each award is locked for one year from its award date. You get dividends, but can't sell
• ✅ Withdrawals in that year take back US$1 for every US$300 withdrawn, oldest awards first
• ✅ Closing the account before the anniversary forfeits locked shares
• ✅ Starting an application first and finding the link later doesn't work

Who's excluded: anyone who has ever held an IBKR account, residents of Japan, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Poland, mainland China or Israel, and people sharing an address with the person whose link they use.
