Career

I'm turning 30 this year and I don't know what career path I should choose/pursue after being in different industries.

After graduating from university with a degree in Business Management / Communications, I did production/events work for about 6-9 months before moving on to a small boutique marketing agency for 1.5 years and then moved on to an MNC advertising tech company for 2 years. After which, I left the job (due to the company not doing well / M&A) to help out my father with his car dealership business doing sales since June'22 but realized that I'm not as good at Sales as I thought I'd be (helping people and serving customers but not that good in closing deals or getting new leads) and I'm thinking if I should really stay in this job as I'm getting an allowance/salary of about half of what I used to earn in the advertising tech industry.

I planned to give myself a year (so till June'23) to see whether this job/career is suitable for me but with a lot of financial commitments coming up (house loan, renovations, planning for a kid), I'm thinking if I should just speak to my father early and at the same time, find a job either back in the advertising tech industry or do something else altogether (which is going to be tough since I'm 30 and am a 'jack of all trades, master of none' kind of guy. Thankfully, my wife is doing well in her job earning 3x of what I do now but I'd like to either match her pay so that at least we'll be less stressed out with finances. What should I do?

It seems like for the future job, ur main priority is to make as much money as you can and potentially match your wife's income. In that case, you may need to try job that has high potential and that is likely a sales job.

It is good that you realise that you are not good at it. But if your priority is clear and all u want is the pay, then be prepared to put in the hard work and overcome your weakness.

such is life. most of the time you dont get the best of all worlds. either you get something you like but paid lower or u do something u dislike but get paid higher. See what you are ready for.

Don't worry man, I think most people here are just working for the money and going with the flow too. I am also unsure of what I really want, so I just go with an open mind and learning attitude to pick up as many skills as possible. Along the way, I start to understand myself better; I dislike work that deals with very large group of people on daily basis. I like work to have a mix of desk bound and some interaction with people. I like my work to be helping people. I dislike sale, I dislike being dictated, etc.

Currently I am doing admin work. It can be 'boring' but I have work life balance, I have time for other activities beyond work. So currently I kind of enjoy my work and life.

Just work in your dad's company and take over the business someday. Why be an employee when you can be the boss?

Erm...What is driving you to change? Wife's pay? If so, will your next job guarantee that the balance of power at home will be fixed? Take care, bro and find something that you can last and build on for the next 10 years to capitalise later...

Why not more than one? Stay in a job that pays the bill, and in the meantime create other sources of...
