I'm having a child soon. Am I entitled to maternity leave?

Is there a set amount of maternity leave I can claim? Or do maternity leave benefits vary by company?

Maternity leave is a legal entitlement in Singapore. This means your employer can't deny you this right, if you qualify. Leave entitlements vary between 12 to 16 weeks, depending on your child's citizenship. Some companies may provide you with additional leave beyond these legal minimums (but they can't give you less), so check with your HR department. Make sure you provide your boss with at least 1 weeks' notice before starting maternity leave, otherwise the company has the right to reduce your maternity leave pay.

You'll have 16 weeks of paid maternity leave if:

  1. Child is SG citizen

  2. Been employed/self-employed for at least 3 months before childbirth

You'll have 12 weeks of paid maternity leave if:

  1. Child is not SG citizen

  2. Been employed/self-employed for at least 3 months before childbirth

In 2017, the requirement to be legally married to qualify for maternity leave was amended. It's no longer a factor in considering maternity leave eligibility.

Hi there, as what Nathaniel has mentioned. This is compulsory in Singapore and your legal entitlement - your employer have to meet the regulations.

Depending on your company, the benefits might differ.

But please do not hesitate to reach out to your HR to find out more, and do not feel worried about it hampering your career.
