I just graduated from University. I have been searching for a few months now but I am still unable to secure a job. Anyone facing the same issues? What did you do in your situation?

For experienced people out there, have you met with such a situation before? What are the best options for me right now?

I am sure you have done your preliminary google search before reading this post. In addition to what most websites would advise fresh graduates on “having a positive mindset” and “keeptrying, nevergive up” and “brush up your CV“, I would suggest you to be daring, proactive and resourceful.

If you find a job you like on job portals, check out the organisational website or blog and email HR directly with your customised CV and cover letter indicating your interest and value as a potential candidate. Even if there’s no available jobs at the moment, your direct proposition done in a professional and enthusiastic manner to the Hiring Manager, would leave you in a good place for future opportunities. (P.S. I got one of my jobs half a year after I have emailed one hiring manager directly although there was no open positions at that point of time).

Consider different ways to reach out to a company instead of relying solely on job portals. Job portals usually go through ATS (applicant tracking system) where keywords in your CV is scanned for compatibility to filter out unsuitable candidates. It would be advisable to keep your CV and cover letter professional and simple, but that shouldn’t limit you to including links to your portfolio or website which you can showcase your creative chops.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have relevant testimonials and recommendation letters as well. If you are interested in learning how to write an effective job proposition, do reach out to me.

Hi there,

Have you considered signing up for SGUnited Traineeships Programme? I think that is a very nice initiative by the govt and could potentially be a good stepping stone for you to start off your career.

Other than that, have you thought about fine-tuning your expectation during this period?

Seedly has an article which I think is pretty insightful as well. Have a good read and I wish you the very best :)
