Hi Anon!
The agent's recommendation might be based on your current priorities and / or budget. If priority for Critical illness is high, it is recommended to get a separate plan for CI for additional and better coverage -- on top of the life coverage.
Although there are products in the market (regardless of the provider) that offers life coverage, as well as protection for different stages of critical illness.

It depends on the rationale for doing so. For instance, do you enjoy better coverage at a cheaper premium? Does the proposal fits into your needs and goals over the long-term?

Generally, a term insurance policy will be cheaper than a whole life insurance policy. However, the coverage period may not be ideal. Therefore, this is a possible consideration to that end.
