I am scared of taking up a contract job which has no relation to my previous employments. Will it affect my resume?

I don't mind taking up the job because I do not want to have a gap in my resume but then again, i'm scared how my future employer will view me :( What do you think

Anon, your concerns are totally valid. Having a pretty colourful resume, I had the same thoughts too. Here's my two cents' worth.

You might want to consider the following points:

  1. Can you envision yourself continuing in the new industry after this contract role? Or would you definitely go back to something related to your previous employment once you have the chance?

  2. How are your finances looking for yourself (and dependents)? Do you have an appropriate amount of emergency funds to tide you through if you choose not to take up this job? Any big expenditures coming up?

  3. Have an open mind about the transferable skills you may hone in the contract role i.e. mindset is important - take the chance to learn about the industry and whatever skill sets you can pick up.

  4. Are employee benefits a priority to you? It varies from company to company, but there is difference in terms of benefits, bonuses, and other perks for employees under contract vs permanent employment.

  5. Whether it's an employment gap or other less "conventional" segments on your resume, what's more important is that you own them and able to articulate your value to your potential employers! After all, you would want to work with a company you are aligned with.

Hope this helps. All the best! 💪🏽

I dont think gap in resume is a bad thing, as long as you can justify why there was a gap. Even if you wanted to take a sabatical or a break

Just go for it. You will acquire some skills and knowledge that will give you a unique perspective - which will be helpful for subsequent jobs. And who is to say that these skills won't be transferable to your next job?

better than being unemployed and letting your mind run wild!

Go for it! It's not that you're doing something illegal or idling your time away. Just explain you wanted to try out different experiences - that would put you in a better light too as the employer will feel you're someone who's eager to learn and try new tasks.

It's all about perspectives

As a employer, I don't feel there is such thing as not related. It's more of how candidates are able...
