How to deal with a default record on my credit report that continues to haunt me even when my credit score is now AA?

I have a default record due to a small cc fee that I forgot to pay 10 years back when I was a student. The account got closed and written off. This was resolved 2+ years ago when I was applying for a home loan and discovered my score to be HH! Now my credit score is AA. But I still get rejected by banks for credit cards. I'm earning much more than the min needed for all the cards I apply. It's irritating because I'm trying to optimize my credit cards and savings. What should I do?
