I was previously self-employed too. What I did was to calculate as a fixed % of my commissions. I split my commission for different usage. A certain percentage will be set aside for my expenses, savings, taxes, business cost. You may need to play around with the % though, to get something that works for you.

If your income is erratic, having an annual goal is often better. You should have fixed expenses every month, stick to them, and save the rest.

In most cases, conservative self-employed people tend to save more as compared to if they are employed.
