How much do you spend / budget on gifts/presents for others (e.g. family, loved ones, friends) a year? Do you budget for it or is this usually spontaneous? Thanks!

Asking this because after monitoring my expenditure for about 2 years, i notice i spend about 30% of my variable expenditure on gifts and such. (and this is excluding the monthly allowance i give to my parents and meals i treat others). is it considered a lot or normal? i’m just wondering how to lower the expenses but still be able to bless my friends and loved ones on special occasions. thanks!

I think the important thing is regardless of whether it's budgeted or spontaneous, we have to have an amount of 'gifting' allocation set aside. Usually I will segregate the usual planned gifting - birthdays, anniversary as one portion, and another small sum for spontaneous gifting - colleague's farewell, small treats, random gifting as another portion. Monthly I'll contribute a fixed amount to both portions. If it's used up that month then so be it, else it will roll over to next month. And the flexibility is that if u need that amount saved for gifting for another purpose, you can move the extras to that purpose.
