I would consider bonds / mutual funds in your portfolio if you are not willing to take up much risk.
Individal stocks picking provide high risk but also high returns.

There are no standard answer to how many stocks to have in a portfolio. Most Importantly, when you decide to invest in a certain company, you will have to understand the nature of their business and whether does it suits your risk profile.
In the case of a balanced risk profile, it will be good to add some growth and dividend counters as you will be able to receive cashflow from the dividend counters while enjoying potential capital gain in the growth counters.
