In general, having a bachelor degree helps you to command higher salary, and that first class honour can command higher salary than third class honour in public sector especially.

But of course, the usefulness of a bachelor degree in salary negotiation largely depends on the sector and industry you are applying for.

Generally, I would say a polytechnic diploma is the basic qualification to survive in the corporate world. Getting a degree indeed can help you open more corporate doors, however, it depends on which industry and the role you are looking for.

I do know people who only have O levels but are bosses (they own companies themselves), while the rest of us with paper qualifications are corporate survivors. Maybe people with lower qualifications are more willing to think out of the box to make money.
