Generally, I would say a polytechnic diploma is the basic qualification to survive in the corporate world. Getting a degree indeed can help you open more corporate doors, however, it depends on which industry and the role you are looking for.
I do know people who only have O levels but are bosses (they own companies themselves), while the rest of us with paper qualifications are corporate survivors. Maybe people with lower qualifications are more willing to think out of the box to make money.
