How is it possible for all three MRT lines to breakdown at the same time? The electricity sources powering all three lines couldn't possibly all come from the same source?

If they all come from the same electricity source, that would appear quite absurd to me especially since we must have thought about avoiding that.

You are half right!! two lines did come from the same source due to some decisions made.

The three lines did not break down at the same time. The EW line broke down first. To restore power, there was an attempt to draw power from Buona Vista Intake substation (BVI), but this was done without first isolating the fault, resulting in a power supply disruption to the Circle Line as well; which the substation also serves.

In conclusion, it could have been only the EW line but a few decisions made caused 3 line to breakdown in succession.
