Hi! A little confused about the waitlist idea.
I do have a confirmed trip to New York, planned. And currently the first and business class tickets are all on waitlist. Do I still go ahead to buy an economy ticket first? But just in case I do managed to get through the waitlist, am I able to cancel the economy ticket? Or any recommendations on how I can go about doing this?

If you are buying a revenue ticket, get the Standard ticket which allows for cancellation, albeit at a fee.
Another option would be to redeem an Economy ticket - you can cancel an award ticket for USD75.
Compare the price of the revenue Standard ticket (which is more expensive than the lowest priced Lite ticket) versus the value you're redeeming at the Economy rate to see which has better value.

I would make a backup plan in case the waitlist does not clear, since your trip is planned for already. Book an economy ticket under a refundable fare. 14 fays prior to your departure, the wait list result will be known. At that point, either you can log on to confirm and ticket your booking while canceling your economy ticket if the waitlist clears, or else you will have to put up with economy seats. Plenty of airlines fly between Singapore and New York, and I would break the journey up, if only to get a chance to stretch my body.
