Some things to consider before telling:

Read your employment contract. What does it say about side jobs?
How important is your main job?
Is your side job of a different industry (non-conflict)?
Is your side job affecting your main job? E.g. you are more tired at work, etc
What are the consequences if your boss finds it out by himself or herself? Will your boss enforce anything based on the contract?
How important is your side job?

As for myself, if I ever want to pick up a side job, I will consider (1), (3) and (4).
