I'll be answering this from the perspective of using Instagram as my main platform for content creation! What I do to help my IG posts do better is to bring attention to it via IG stories. IG stories can be very useful as a tool in gaining more eyeballs onto your content, as I think people tend to watch IGS more than scroll their feed, but this is of course based on my personal experience.

You can identify what works best for your platform by measuring the metrics on your posts and engagement with your content across different platforms/tools/verticals, and then work around that. What I think helps on IG/IGS is also short form video content, especially when you're speaking in them. These definitely drive more engagement than static posts!

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram has recently announced that Instagram is no longer a photo sharing app. They have decided to shift their focus to video content in bid to compete with giant tech companies like Tik Tok. Which means videos will be prioritized more than photos and photo content will take a backseat and reach to lesser people.

Consider doing more video content to reach to more people. The social media landscape is ever-changing and there is no one platform that will stay popular forever. Expand your platforms to more than IG. Consider Twitter, Tik Tok, Facebook, LinkedIn (Depending on the content you create)

Last year, I posted a Youtube video about how to cope with anxiety during quarantine. I posted a photo on IG to mention about it on IG. I converted the transcript to an article and posted it to my Medium blog. I shared the link about the blog on LinkedIn. From 1 piece of content, I posted on 4 platforms in different format.
