The cat grading - Grades A, B and C.

Before the cats reach the shores of Singapore, they are first categorized into different grading by the suppliers for the purpose of billing invoices to us.

There are basically 3 grades as follows:

Grade A

This is the best grade, or rather the usual grade for the cats brought into Singapore.

The cats weigh at least one kg and above.

The shape is usually rounder, though at times we do receive some slightly irregular ones (so long as they are above one kg, they are considered as Grade A). Hence, it is at the discretion of the suppliers to choose the cats for us and a good rapport certainly helps in selecting the rounder ones for us!

The yield is dependent on the size of the fruit. It is around 20-25% of the weight of the fruit, ie, a 2kg fruit yields 400g-500g of flesh after being dehusked.

Hence, the prices are the most expensive for this grade.

Grade B

This is the second grade, and sometimes the cats are brought into Singapore for various reasons.

The cats weigh less than one kg, and are often known as small cats or 小猫.

The shape is usually irregular with a thicker husk.

The yield is low, around 4 seeds per fruit. And because of its lower yield, the flesh is usually chubbier with a more intense taste as the nutrients are concentrated within that few seeds!

Hence, the prices for Grade B are lower than Grade A’s, say around 20-30% lower.

Grade C

This is the lowest grade, and very rarely the cats are brought into Singapore (as far as we know!)

The cats are either badly infested with worms or bitten by animals in the wild.

Hence, the prices are the lowest for this grade.

And as always, our displayed MSW prices are for the Grade A cats.

As the cost prices for these grades of cats are billed by the suppliers, the selling prices for them should not differ too much in the market for the same grade.

Whichever grade that you may be getting, it is important to know that you are paying the right prices for them! Do not find yourself in situations where you are paying the price of a Grade A’s for a Grade B durian!

And when one thinks the above gradings are complicated enough, we do come across others who categorized them into further gradings such as, AA, AAA, AB, BB!
