How do people find mentors?

How do people look for mentors, and why do mentors take up the mentorship role? In what ways can such mutually beneficial relationships be formed and sustained?

Hi anon, not sure which stage of life you are in but there are many avenues available to find a mentor! A mentor-mentee relationship can be official or unofficial. Ultimately, aside from seeking a mentor for professional development advice, you should also have the mindset that you're going to make a new friend! In that way, the mentorship will blossom naturally (it takes 2 hands to clap). Many mentors take up the mentorship role as they would like to give back and help those who are driven to improve and achieve.

If you are in the working world, your superiors or senior colleagues can be mentors to you with their wealth of experience. It doesn't hurt to ask them out for a 1-1 coffee chat! For all you may know, they might be more than willing to provide you advice and guidance. Young NTUC also has a virtual mentorship programme that you can join here: https://www.lit.sg/virtual-mentorship

If you are a student in University, I am sure your Alumni Relations or Career Office will have mentorship programmes that will allow you to reach out to your alumni. In SMU, our Office of Alumni Relations runs mentorship programmes twice a year and I have benefitted alot from it. I am also in The Mentoring Circle, SMU's premier mentoring club. You can check us out here: https://linkedin.com/company/thementoringcircle.

I have also signed up for Advisory's mentorship programme (not a financial advisory company) and found a really good mentor there! You can check them out here: https://mentorship.advisory.sg/

There are also many online mentoring resources out there such as webinars to allow you to engage with working professionals in various industries. One such platform is https://hellomrkinobi.com/ .

If you are passionate about mentorship, you can start a mentorship programme in whichever organisation you are! I'm always up for a coffee chat if you would like to find out more about how to start your own mentorship programme. :)

Network, network and Network!

"Your network is your net worth"

Everywhere you can and dont be afraid to ask people for coffee (or zoom meetings now!)

the worst case scenario is they ignore your email or text message and just move on with life.

then when you show tenacity and hustle, mentors are attracted to such individuals and you will find the harder you work, the luckier you get with mentorship and asking for advice.

and with that always give back as well. When you have made it in life or some part of career or finance or whatever it is Via communities :)
