I would prefer higher monthly pay because monthly pay most of the time reflects your grade and position in your job. It ties to your personal performance. While bonus is variable, depends on company performance. I feel that you would be appreciated more when you apply for next job if you have higher montly pay.

High monthly pay with average bonus.

Reason:

  1. Company usually pay bonus at end of annual accounting period. Higher salary means every month you get more $ than later. This is especially good when you can get the $ to invest first rather than later. Also when you decide to resign, there's no need to ponder for the lost of bonus or wait for post bonus to resign.

  2. Employee cpf contribution ceiling is 6k. So if your salary is above 6k, the rest is your take home pay for savings / investment. While bonus is also subject to cpf employee deduction on your end, so this way you will be forced to contribute more into cpf. Not saying cpf is bad, but it's better you take the $ and save or invest or voluntarily contribute to your cpf a/c rather than being forced to.

  3. Final reason, HR always based on last drawn to offer you salary package. So a higher monthly pay ialso marks a higher starting point for next job HR to calculate your basic pay based on that baseline.

Cheers.

The former. Bonuses are subjected to changes, and if the economy doesn't well you'll be affected. And it's a bonus, which means you shouldn't expect it. It's a bonus if you get, if you don't, then it just your monthly pay.

Its up to you?

I prefer average monthly pay with high bonus (jackpot). this partly explains why I always take up jobs and doing my own business that have high returns only if it works out successfully.

It also make sure I put in my best effort to make it successfully.

My stand is that an average pay is fine for normal living, a high monthly pay doesn't make a difference in my life

but a huge bonus can change my life dramatically.

I am aiming for those big differences in my life. Big bonus always!
