It depends on where you wish to travel to. For example, let's assume that you wish to travel to Japan and it takes about 30k miles for a one-way trip.

If you have a general miles card like Citi PremierMiles, you will need to spend $25k locally or $15k in overseas spending to accumulate 30k miles.

If you have a reward points credit card that is able to yield 4 miles per dollar, then you will need to spend $7.5k.
