Context: I am a comms student (also a comms army personnel, read Signals…) with above-average grades.
I took a look at the fees and realized they are about the same (Correct me if I'm wrong). I am entering uni next year and would love to seek experiences from both parties.
My considerations are:
Can someone share their past experiences?

If you intend to work in Singapore, definitely go local uni. Its baffling that anyone would even consider private uni when they can choose to go local uni. If you are young and going to study full-time, why rush your degree at a private uni and risk your future career when you can earn a more prestigious degree which will also help in your career prospects? For a full-time student without much working experience, your degree is all you have. Don't waste your time, money and brain cells on a private uni degree.

Since everyone is talking about the benefits of local universities, I think your option should be crystal.
There was only one scenario whereby a decision to enter a private university made me go: "wa, actually like this quite smart eh?"
The time taken to earn that piece of paper (a.k.a your degree).
Let's take for example, an army officer that will otherwise take 4 years to get promoted can now do it in 1 if he gets a degree. Why then, would he enroll in a 3-year local university course when I can do it in a year and a half at a private one?
disclaimer: I am not sure if his pay was affected by the nature of his degree, but that man was my OC a few years back (cannot say la, later yall guess my age). Got his captain rank right after he got the degree.

Hi anon,
I am from a private university and i would say go for local if you can. Opportunities arises from the school prestige itself. Not everyone will be able to enter but just try your best.
Local university will be more ideal as employers tend to prefer local grads over private uni grads. It will be easier to get an internship and full time job eventually. Local grads will definitely take a shorter time to get a job as compared to a private uni. Although people tend to disagree, it is very real in the job market.
But this doesn't mean that all private universites are bad. Private uni grads just need a chance to prove themselves at their first job and the rest will be dependent on their performance. Some of the best candidates are from private u. But sadly, they were denied of that chance just because of certification. I took around 3 months to find a traineeship after graduating last year. Still trying to secure a full time job now. Cant always blame the economy but one has to constantly improve.
What matters is that you build up your skills and experiences. A hella lot of networking helps too. Always find a way to stand out from your fellow job applicants like building a portfolio or something. For us, we gotta to play a different game from regular job seekers from local u. We can't change what employers think, but we can work on improving and innovating to be deserving of that job.
It would be best if employers screen candidates on their skills and experiences instead of using school names. But that only exist in a perfect world.
Hope this is useful. Stay safe and work hard, work smart.

Go local, makes your life alot easier. Unfortunately employees do differentiate at that level, unless you're really an exceptional candidate
