Drop out or Remain in University while facing financial pressure?

Hi, I'm currently facing a dilemma. I'm a 25Y/O guy, currently studying an engineering degree at a local Uni while working part-time to survive on my own and supporting my immediate family. My grades are not very good (2.5/5.0), and I had to repeat a year in school. Completed 3 years of studies, still have 2~3 more years to go.

I initially had the passion to study, but I have lost my way as I realised after 3 years that engineering was not what I was really good at (Math, Sciences), rather it was the human side of engineering that I'm more interested in and good at (Management, Workplace safety, etc). While one of my parent wants me to continue studying in the context that I have already done 3 years in Uni, I should continue completing the degree for the last 3 years (bite the bullet and fight on), the other is nonchalant and indifferent about my situation.

As the one financing my degree due to the family's financial situation, I feel that rather than staying on with the possibility of failing and eventually being kicked out with a huge sum of debt to repay ($110K+), I would rather volunteeraily drop out, repay my debt ($30k~40k+), then once my own financial situation is more stablisiled and I don't have to worry about my family or my own financial situation, I can retake a degree (full-time or part-time) that is better suited for my passion and align with what I would like to do in life.

For those studying currently or who have been through a similar situation as me, what would you have done: stay on or drop out and try again? What suggestions would you give to your younger self if you were in this situation?

I might consider to drop and work (have income) + study part time degree for the area I am interested in.

But do weigh the costs and benefits for this as you do have a study loan to pay, dependent on the certificate u have now (diploma/a-levels?) - how it will affect your job search, etc.

Either way (hold on or drop), u will have to bite the bullet as there are challenges - depends on your ability to sustain / where you want to channel your energies in.

  • A degree is a tool for a better life. If the tool is currently destroying your life and your future financial capacity, it's not the right tool for right now.

  • You mention you are more interested in workplace safety & management, you may get a professional cert in WSH or Project Management thru skillfuture with much lower cost.
