Does Singapore environment makes people not hungry to want to pursue and learn new things and gain new heights?

Suppose you reached the stage of life that you are contented with your life, single, w

no debt to pay, no children or family to need to take care financially, has sufficient savings to live on, no need to spend much, no need to worry about financial support, but have a job that is not stable with risk of redundancy. Will you worry about losing the job?

Will you consider:

1) more challenging and stressful new job and chiong to climb corporate ladder, or

2) career change into a new industry without relevant skillset and with great pay cut but you get to learn something new and different and perhaps less stressful, or

3) chill, stay on in current job? Do the routine, no breakthrough no new learning, until made redundancy and then find a new job, or

4) any other choices?

Contentment with life and a sense of concern about job security usually do not co-exist together.

The salaryman who is contented will often not be self aware enough to know his job is redundant and vice versa, the salaryman who is not contended will often want more out of his job and go with option 1 or more out of his life and go with option 2.

But to your question, personally my opinion is that your environment does not define you but who you surround yourself with moulds your mindset and perception, a simple example is in Reddit, depending on which subthread you find supporters of lie flat or FIRE.

I think that is quite dependent on the person itself, the environment that he/she grew up in, the experiences that he/she has gone thru in life, the many changes that happened or did not happen. Society has a factor to play as well via social norms etc hence the idea of the herd mentality. However, end of day, I feel it is how the thinking of the person that will shape the outcome.
