Does getting a driver's license still worth it currently?

Hi, I was wondering, with the increasing cost to purchase a car + the slowly but surely rising cost to get a driver's license (School - $2.6K, Private - $1.6k, is it still worth it to get a driver's license? Or should I use the cost of getting a license to invest in other things and then get a license later at a later stage?

Some company require you to have the license so that u can b their driver.

It's a skill you should have, even if you don't see yourself driving in this lifetime. Some drivers even get motorcycle licenses as a skill, even if they don't ride bikes!

It's better to get a license now such that if the need for a car arises in the future, all you need is just a refresher course and some practice to get up to speed, rather than having to take the whole driver's license process from scratch

Its really useful and good to have.

Hi Alcander, great question! My 2c is that if you do see yourself driving in the future (even if it's not near) - it's better to take it sooner than later.

We definitely have a great public transport system in Singapore and driving a car is a luxury not a necessity for most.

Assuming (due the concern you had on cost) you may not intend to own a car and will rent: Whether you are renting a car in Singapore/overseas, there is this term called "young drivers license" where typically if you held your license for less than 2 years: you'll be subjected to paying additional fees vs someone who had held their license for more than 2 years.

This clause is enough for me to encourage all the younger ones that it's always better to take your driver's license sooner than later! (of course only if you can afford it)

Other things to consider:

  • Increasing rates due to inflation and future monopoly of school - There are no more new private drivers for hire and the school will one day be monopoly (which means price wise they can set rates and have 0 competition which I think may further drive prices up on top of inflation).
  • Comfort Level of not using driving skills regularly - If you may not able to rent or use a family car, are you alright to not use your driving skills in the next few years? I see this tendency that girls get more scared to drive after not using this skill for a while sadly. (tho if you're one of them reading this, i highly encourage you to get back on the road and practice with a trusted experienced friend who can encourage and help you learn!) If you foresee that you may be afraid, you should perhaps consider getting a license closer to when you may use this skill regularly.
  • Busyness of life - if you have pockets of time while studying now, it's a great skill to consider learning. You may not have the luxury of time (or may feel too tired) when you enter the working world.

Not everything can be measured simply by cost. But. If we were to measure by cost, I think the question is.. what is the opportunity cost of not getting a license? Will the monies be put to a better place with a much higher potential return?

Hope this helps.
