Does everyone working in engineering (working experience of more than 3 years) earn more than $4000/month or above median salary?

I have been working as an engineer since 2017, graduated from NTU. But my pay is still less than $3600 (including of allowances). Feels demoralized as people around me mostly earn more than $4000 and $4000 seems to be a very ‘normal’ salary in Singapore.

Hey anon, it depends on which field and specialization you are in. If you are in the software field, then you are most likely underpaid since the median for junior engineers are already $4750 (and you are considered mid level!)

You can check out https://nodeflair.com/salaries to understand more on what people are actually making in the different companies and industries. (Disclosure: I work there)

Some of my thoughts.

  1. May I know which industry are you in?
  2. I know how you feel when comparing with your peers, but I would think it’s underpaid if you are in semi conductor, built environment, or other engineering sectors
  3. As others have mentioned, if you are still interested in your current sector/industry, start exploring and applying to other companies to know your market rate and opportunities in the same sector.
  4. Do not feel that your working experience is ‘wasted’ if you leave your current company (e.g project not completed, etc.), other company might have similar or better experience/opportunities for you.
  5. Staying in the same company might have limited increments %, especially if the company is not doing very well during COVID situation
  6. You have to balance between money, experience and passion. Practically, money is still more important as you can have more financial strategies such as investing at younger age.

Being in your shoes before..

To be honest, having $3600 with a local uni is too low.. I will advice you make a change in your job.

But, before changing your job for something with a higher pay.. there are few question to ask yourself...

1) What make you stayed in this job for this long?

2) Are you prepare for the changes ahead once you change you job? If you have commitments, do discuss with your love ones and forsee how it will affect your lifestyle going forward (Eg. due to higher pay, lesser flexibilty + OTs).

With those answers, then decide on what you should look out for the next job / if its a right choice to move on.

Like many had said, when you are at $X000, you will want higher.. and it just goes on.. So I suggest that you request for an amount which you feel you deserve for your next job and most importantly.. choose a job which you enjoy doing :)

Don't feel bad, was a local Uni grad but I earned less than 3K per month with no annual bonus or 13 mth for the first 5 years I worked with no increment during that time.

I realised how undervalued I was and left soon after. Now is a good time to reevaluate your skills and see if your own company will increase your salary or find out if other opportunities are available.

Do you have annual increments? If not, maybe you can consider job hopping for that gradual salary bu...
