Credit Card Recommendations For Big Ticket Items

Hi Seedly Community,

Firstly, wishing all of you guys a safe, healthy and prosperous 2022!

My partner & I are getting married this year and we have a few big ticket items on the list:

1) Wedding: ~$40K

1a) Pre & Actual Day Shoot: ~$6K

2) Reno: ~$50K

3) Furniture & Fittings: ~$20K

I've done some research regarding Miles vs Cashback and I think most probably we would go with Miles as we can redeem those Biz Class tickets for our future honeymoon (Big thanks to Kenneth for writing this guide: https://blog.seedly.sg/miles-cards-for-big-purc...)

Also, some of the topics/discussions on Seedly on this subject are slightly outdated, in 2019/2020. Hence i have to create a new thread on this topic.

However, I've noticed that the promos for new CC sign ups are not as attractive compared to past sign up bonuses. Hence, I have a few questions to check with you gurus:

1) Which is the best CC for miles accumulation for our items listed above?

  • Assuming that hotel allows us to split & have monthly payments up till actual wedding date

2) If we were to take a renovation loan, would we be able to accumulate miles/points during monthly loan repayment if we were to pay using that particular card?

  • Not sure if CardUp/Citi Payall counts in this scenario

Thanks in advance to all who have replied this thread!!

Markus

To reply further, for me now, I use a combination of:

  • HSBC Revolution card (4mpd) regular spending - focused on F&B and retail spend
  • CITI Rewards card, regular spending - focus on online spend
  • Krisflyer Ascend (depending on sign up bonus)

I think a good follow up to this is from a good friend, The MileLion: https://milelion.com/2022/01/01/the-milelions-2...

Oh hello! Thanks for sharing this old blogpost, the information is actually quite dated already...

But what I can say is that I did get the miles as above. Totally. ended up with close to 400k miles from the total of our wedding expenses as a whole between my wife and me.

Hi Markus,

Happy New Year to you too. I was also looking for the same for reno.
