Chocolate Finance USD Account: 4.3% p.a. Explained (Is It Worth Converting Your SGD?)

Most of the Chocolate Finance chatter here focuses on the SGD account, but honestly the USD side is where I think the numbers get genuinely interesting, especially if you already hold USD or get paid in it occasionally.

The rates right now

  • 4.3% p.a. on your first US$20,000
  • 4% p.a. on your next US$30,000
  • Up to 4% p.a. on anything above US$50,000

That's meaningfully higher than the SGD tiers, and higher than what most USD fixed deposits in Singapore are currently offering without a lock-in.

How you actually fund it

Two ways:

  1. Convert SGD to USD instantly inside the app (there's a small FX guarantee fee — roughly 0.25% on weekdays, 0.50% on weekends — which locks in your rate at the moment of conversion so you're not exposed to the rate moving mid-transfer)
  2. Transfer USD directly from your own bank account — free and usually instant from DBS, other banks may charge their own fees and take longer

Who this actually makes sense for

  • Freelancers or remote workers getting paid in USD who don't want to convert everything back to SGD immediately
  • Anyone who already holds USD savings elsewhere earning close to nothing
  • People who want some currency diversification without opening a full multi-currency brokerage account just for that

Who it probably doesn't

  • If you don't already hold or need USD, converting SGD just to chase the higher rate exposes you to FX risk on the way back — the FX guarantee fee applies both directions, and currency movements can easily wipe out a rate advantage over a short holding period
  • If you might need the money in SGD again soon, the round-trip conversion cost isn't nothing

A few practical details

  • Withdrawals to a DBS account are free, other banks incur a US$20 handling fee
  • Balances below US$50k typically start earning returns the next day; above that it can take 3–5 business days
  • The Top-Up Programme backstops both your first S$50k and first US$50k during the current qualifying period — that's a combined S$228k+ equivalent of supported balance if you're using both currencies

Happy to go deeper on the FX fee mechanics in the comments if anyone's weighing whether the conversion is worth it for their specific amount.
