First question you need to ask yourself is: do you really need whey protein?
β
A few other questions you might ask yourself to help you answer the question above is:
- what are your fitness goals? (if serious lean muscle building is your goal then perhaps whey protein will be the way to go as it is a very clean source of protein. if you want to just keep fit and maybe lose some fats, then whole food would suffice. you don't have to spend extra on whey protein regularly, all that's needed is some adjustment to your current whole food diet. look into going or a caloric deficit while taking a close look at your macro nutrients. if losing weight, as opposed to losing fats, then perhaps just adjust your calories so you will be on a caloric deficit)
- what's wrong with your current diet? (whole foods has better micro nutrients. whole foods in general also has higher satiety meaning it will keep you full for longer compared to whey protein hence reducing the need for you to eat as frequently which saves you money and also time. also whole food tastes better in general compared to whey protein - drinking it maybe the first few times feels like a treat, but once you get to the stage of daily consumption, it becomes quite an unpleasant experience having to down whey protein shakes.)
- I see that you have tagged myprotein, myprotein imho has good micronutrients and the protein/gram ratio is very good, but i think they are onlly affordable during big sale days where you can get up to 60% discount. Myprotein also takes 2 weeks to arrive compared to more locally readily available brands. But i think even with the discount it will still be more expensive compare to Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey going at around SGD89 which i think is the better brand in terms of mixability and price, and it also no slack in the micronutrients department. There are other brands like Synta-6 and Muscletech which are also still comparable in terms of affordability compared to Myprotein, but I think Optimum Nutrition is still better when looking at price vs performance.
So in conclusion:
- if you have the time, go for whole foods. a clean high-protein diet is achieveable with a bit of work, and can be fun too. also look into investing in an air-fryer, i find that is the best companion for those looking to eat clean - just throw everything in the air fryer, i don't even use oil or salt but you can add some oil, salt and seasoning, then after that you can do your stuff, wait for the bell to ring, and voila, you have your clean high-protein meal ready!
- if you really do need whey protein, I would go for Optimum Nutrition, hasn't faled me and its one of the most widely used whey protein brand - and for good reasons. But if you're looking only at price points, there are plenty of small-time brands that probably has better price points, just sort the search results on online stores by low-to-high prices.
