Can Singapore sustain her economy if there’s a natural calamity?

Natural disasters has always been a threat for many nations. We take our geographic location for granted and so far, nothing devastating has occurred. However, are we prepared for such events? What happens to our properties? How will our economy respond?

Are we prepared for such events?

Yes and No.

Yes we are always prepare for close possible events or natural disaster.

Eg. Haze, building on fire(always had fire drill), virus outbreaks (eg. SARS) etc. those we are prepared.

Total Defense!

For other types, No we are not prepare for earth quake or Tsunami since we do not even had close encounter. Thus I don't see any effort of $ spend on preparing for it since it's more of a wastage of tax payer's $, time and resources.

What happens to our properties?

Since we're not in major earth quake area, so our buildings did not spend extra $, time and space to cater for earthquake proof design. Thus it might be shaken or worst case scenario toppled in the event of earth quake.

How will our economy respond?

We have more than enough to "shock the whole world" national reserves, our financial system is robust and tightly controlled. Even a small town council can have 1 to 2 mil to invest, thus I believe our public civil system or bodies is ready in the sense of having sufficient reserve to overcomes troubles.

For buildings, I believe most were insured for fire and some form of natural disaster (I hope they do!), so the owner is more or less covered. It could probably be the insurance company that may need some savings or support if say earthquake really strikes.

Finally, I wanted to say we're quited blessed and Favoured one!

Look at the map below where:

We're surrounded or rather also protected!

If Tsunami hit our:

(1) Left and bottom we had Indonesia shielding us. (eg. Last Tsunami)

(2) On top we had a big chunk of West M'sia peninsular shielding us and the right more or less is shielded by East M'sia

So as long as we stay alert, be prepare when necessary, I think we're good for as long as possible from natural disaster where we will always do our best to handle and prevent. Since certain things is beyond our control, we will make do and do our best to defend home :)
