Can diagnosis of depression affect existing insurance coverage?

Is it true that someone who is diagnosed with depression cannot have insurance coverage? I recently bought term and CI policies. After a few months I was diagnosed with major depression. Will it affect my coverage?

Hey there!

I will highly encourage you engage a licensed financial advisor to submit a preliminary underwriting for your CI plan and see the outcome. You can decide then whether to go ahead with the plan. Some coverage is ultimately better than no coverage.

For the CI plans underwriting outcome, there are in general four possible outcome For your condition:

1) Exclusion

2) Loading (marked up premiums)

3) Rejection

4) Plan proceeds as per normal

Based on my experience, psychiatric conditions in general may warrant a loading but it really depends.

Do consult a licensed financial consultant to explore your options. Do take care and all the best!
