Can credit card late payment fees be waived?

My aunt had a CitiBank credit card and only used it once ($80+) in 2019. She is not IT-savvy and missed out on e-statement and notification of the payment due. CitiBank only called her up to chase for payment recently. My aunt was shocked to find that the late payment fee had accumulated to $800+.

We understand that it was her negligence that resulted in this incident but it is seems unreasonable to pay such a hefty sum of money. She had paid the amount that was due (minus the late payment fee). She had written emails, called the bank to explain the situation and politely asked for waival. But the call operators were unempathetic and insisted that she had to pay the amount back in full.

Is there any way to solve the problem without paying the full late payment fee? My aunt has been a good customer without any bad records. She is worried that she may be sued for this.

The total amount could be due to the accumulated interest incurred on the amount over time and the late payment fees. Unfortunately the terms of the credit card usage is such.

She might try to write in to MAS but she is still ultimately liable for the amount and may still have to pay up the full amount. Or you could offer to help pay off a portion or the full amount of the fee?

Good to remind her next time to keep track of her credit card usage, due dates and payments.
