As an NSF what have you done or are doing to make the most use of your time during your NS stint?

Hi guys! For myself, I was in a combat unit. As such, I didn't get to spend weekdays at home and used most of my weekends to recuperate after long training hours in camp.

What I did was, I spent a lot of my weekends reconnecting with old friends and learning driving so I could help my dad out when he drives to faraway places (so he doesn't get too tired upon arrival), but I personally felt that I could've done more, like learning how to invest or reading more about psychology and life which I've started to take an interest in right now.

So I was wondering, what have you guys done as NSFs that you feel was the most productive use of your time given the circumstances of your NS job?

I could had spent my time in NS way better.

I'm going to share a story of another NSF I met recently instead 😉 This boy has been an inspiration, he serves with our Navy which grants him a week of shore leave every month.

He uses this time to attend courses, captialising on skillfuture funds and heavily subsidised courses on NTUC learning hub to learn new skills and tap on the experiences of others attending these courses.

One can learn alot from group interactions and experiences of others, usually more than the course itself.

I think the most productive use of time was really upskilling myself and learning during my free time during these 2 years. I picked up some programming skills and delved deeper into stock picking. I think as long as you are learning something new, you will definitely come out with new skills after 2 years!

Have not entered yet but luckily im pes e so ill be using my time to get certificates, build my knowledge and also other goals like fitness etc

Doing excel spreadsheets and become a legitimate money chaser, to hound ppl down for specialist's mess F&B spendings (took me 6 months for 1 NS regular to pay up $150, )

Learnt: Basic accounting and bookkeeping, while in a air-conditioned office. Plus the need for supplier pricing negotiations and stock inventory control for F&B snacks at the Specialists' Mess in the army unit.

Should have taken driving lessons back then (a friend of mine passed with just $900 in year 2009, compared to $2600 for mine in year 2016, that is $1,700 savings for potential uses)
