I've heard that one method is to have the second property in trust with the beneficiary being a Singapore Citizen; however that means we must have a kid and that isn't certain at this point. Do you have any insights to offer, or perhaps even any other 'hacks' to get around this?

No. You can sell if you will not make a list in the resale HDB brought. You could get two pte in each individually name without paying ABSD then. Or you could buy under your child’s name if he/she is 21yo. Personally do not recommend trust. DM me for more no obligation advice
