Are there national regulations on paternity leave? My company told me they don't offer this kind of leave, even though me and my wife are expecting our 1st child soon. Quite confused.

Is paternity leave a benefit that only some companies like MNCs have? I work in an SME (about 50 pax) in the manufacturing sector. HR told me they can give me 1 day off as a "goodwill" gesture on the day that my child is born. But it will be recorded as no-pay leave. But I was under the impression that paternity leave is guaranteed and is paid.

Anyone here have a similar experiene at their company?

I think the extant laws on paternity leave in Singapore vary from one company to another, and some don't even offer such luxuries at all.

So it is easier to request for a couple of days as an "emergency leave" for the actual day of delivery and after that.

In most countries, female employees are more protected under the law with from 1 to 6 months of maternity leave. That's because they are the ones who put to bed.

If you have worked for at least 3 months for your current employer, then you are legally entitled to paid paternity leave.

Paternity leave is 2 weeks in Singapore. Paid paternity leave is enshrined in Singapore's labour laws; as long as you meet the 3-month employment threshold, employers cannot deny you paid leave. If they do, make sure to notify MOM because denying fathers paternity leave is illegal!
