Any tips on climbing the corporate ladder?

I am in the second year of my first job (civil servant). Realised that I may not be a good fit in my industry and hope to move to somewhere else. Looking for some tips on I can make this first job experience a blessing in disguise!

What do you mean by not a good fit? A job experience is a job experience. Try to look for ways that you can contribute and learn. These things can be added into your CV for elaboration during interviews and hopefully carry over to the next job.

Caveat: I'm working for Fortune 500 company, may have different corporate culture. Been promoted 3 times in 7 years, sharing tips in case helpful:

  • Manage expectations well on what's feasible, what's stretch vs. BAU.
  • Proactively define expectations with your manager for promotion. Define success, how to measure it & its threshold. Ask your manager to advocate for you on the upcoming cycle IF you meet all the above.
  • Crush your core job & ensure you're delivering 100% whatever aligned with your manager above.
  • Regularly follow up with your manager on progress on your deliverables (eg. at weekly/ biweekly basis)
  • Have skip level sessions/ leverage office hours with your managers' manager/ 2 layers above when opportunity allow you to do so.
  • If your boss like you, you will climb fast.
