The S&P 500 already represents the US market reasonably. Yes, you can look for other specific indices within the US, but also consider if you have exposure to the rest of the world? Although the S&P 500 is diversified across US, it isn't globally diversified - which means that you are still exposing yourself to more US-specific risk.

Why not go for a growth index ETF like the VOOG instead?

VOOG is an ETF that tracks the S&P 500 Growth Index.

It offers diversification compared to individual growth stock and higher potential for investment growth compared to its large-blend index counterparts like the S&P500 Index, but its share value also rises and falls more sharply than that of large-blend indexes, and are thus more appropriate for long-term goals where one's money growth is desired.

Good to consider if you are looking at staying in the market long-term, and can stomach the volatility.

Cheers!
